This was my first car that I bought when I turned 16 in 1979. I drove it a couple years through out high school then parked it. I ended up giving it away in 1981 to a friends older brother who wanted something to play around with in his spare time. It sat behind his house with a tarp covering it for 26 years.
In April 2007 I met my high school buddy and was informed the car was sitting untouched, his brother never did get around restoring it. I phoned him and asked if he would sell the car back to me, which he did for the same price as he paid for it $0.00.

When I first saw it after 26 years. Took me back to a simplier time

Orginal motor looking tired, but all there. Even the M/T valve covers which was the first thing I did to the car. The originals were even still at my dads farm.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/440six/1971%20Challenger%20340%20RT/DSCN2062.jpg
I decided to do a complete rotissorie restoration on it. I have a friend who's a mopar guru.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/440six/1971%20Challenger%20340%20RT/DSCN0066.jpg
In November 07 we had it ready for the major body work that would be needed to get it right.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/440six/1971%20Challenger%20340%20RT/DSCN0034.jpg
I took it to a respected bodyman who works only on mopars. He's got 4 mopars on the go.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/440six/1971%20Challenger%20340%20RT/71RTChallenger1.jpg
He's replaced pretty much everything from cross members to frame rails on the car. Anything that we thought was not 100% we changed.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/440six/1971%20Challenger%20340%20RT/DSCN2557.jpg
The body work should be done in a couple months, most of the power train has been restored.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/440six/1971%20Challenger%20340%20RT/DSCN0131.jpg
The motor has been rebuilt, waiting for the carb to come back then on the dyno
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/440six/1971%20Challenger%20340%20RT/71340.jpg
It has a green houndstooth cloth interior. Legendary had a roll of original chrysler material.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/440six/1971%20Challenger%20340%20RT/DSCN0102.jpg
The Dash was done by Justdashes, turned out really nice.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/440six/1971%20Challenger%20340%20RT/DSCN2515.jpg
The Grille & rear tail panel are all redone ready to go back on the car. I'm taking lots of pictures as the resto moves ahead. Hopefully it will be done by the summer of 09.

That's a great story. Looks like you had a good car to start with so it should turn out nice. Hate to be picky but, those little tiny 6" tires are going to make it handle like a manure spreader. I don't care for the 17" and 20" BLING BLING wheels that everyone think looks so good on older cars but, you've gone too far the other way.:D J/K. Keep us up to date on it. Bet you can't wait to drive it again. It's nice when a guy still has, or gets back a car from way back when. Congrats!

What did it cost???
It wasn't cheap, around $1000.00 they had to repair one corner which was cracked with a piece missing. I've had a lot of stuff done by them and I'm also vary happy with the end result. Orginally I thought I was going to have to replace my door panels which had speaker holes cut in them. After they were finished you would not of thought they were the same ones.

I would stumble over a field of red, blue & purple cars' to look at your car before any other one. Way cool that you're staying with the original combo, doing nice work as well.
That looks like Kori's place where you're pulling the k-frame?

Nice ride! I like the first pics of it coming apart. Amazing to me how many people forget that everything can come out through the bottom. Just a few quick questions. Who was the source for most body parts? How did they fit? Looking at AMD for the necessary pieces on mine and I've heard good and bad.
440six
10-08-2009, 08:08 AM
I used Goodmark fenders, Quarters, floor and trunk pans, fender skirts, frame rails and hood. I got the door skins from AMD. The bodyman was doing another challenger as well. They used all AMD parts and said they fit alot better.

I was very fortunate to get it back, I keep him updated on the progress and he's pretty excited to see it when we gets it done.
I did find a nice build sheet under the passenger bucket seat. I also found pieces of build sheets under the backseat, behind the glove box and under the carpet. All these were unusable.

Great story and pictures. I have a 71 challenger 340/4spd that I am trying to get back to original with a restored thermoquad. My problem is I don't have the choke yet and I have not idea how the choke is installed in the manifold and how the linkage is hooked to the carburetor. Likewise, I don't know how the accelerator cable hooks up or how the plumbing is suposed to look. Can anyone provide any closeup pictures of an original setup? Also, where should I buy a choke and linkage components. This is my first Mopar...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There were a few issues with the goodmark sheet metal. The quarters should have a notch where the window channel runs down along the quarter glass. We had to notch the channel to have everthing line up. Also the fuel fill spout was not punched correclly. We spotted this before paint.
Both inner fender aprons have issues, Left side battery tray area not punched correctly. The battery tray will not be level. The right inner fender apron does not have the notch where the fuel vapour line bracket mounts.
Tried two different vendors for window felts, the last one was the best of the two, but they were not 100% either.

I ended up using a set by Firestone collectibles, they are the closest fit I found. The doors look great, the quarter window felts are to low in the back and to high at the front.
