A500 vs.A518 ?

This has probably been discussed on this forum, but I couldn't find much on the A500. I'm changing to an overdrive tranny in my '74 Challenger...

This has probably been discussed on this forum, but I couldn't find much on the A500. I'm changing to an overdrive tranny in my '74 Challenger (318/A904). I'm hoping the answers to a few questions will help me make up my mind.

1. I understand the A518 is based on the 727 and the A500 is based on the 904. Will the A500 require less modification than the A518, or are they both about the same externally? How about weight differences between them?

2. From what I read, it looks like most people picked the A518 based on it being stronger. For my purposes, I'm sure that either one is stout enough. Is there any other factors that I should consider?

3. It looks like all A500's use the lockup torque converter. I've heard it only drops about 50 rpm when it engages. That seems like a lot of complication and extra expense for a small benefit, so maybe A518 without the lockup would be better for me. Am I missing something?

4. Whatever I decide, I'll probably need to get it rebuilt. Are rebuild costs about the same for either?

Thanks for any input.

FOR SALE: Here are pics and info on 4 different Federal power steering pumps for Big block or Small block.
#1 is date coded 249th day of 66, and it has an incorrect 6 1/4 inch pullet with a key slot that someone installed previously. It does have typical dents on the reservoir behind where the bracket would go from tightening the belt. Price would be $75 plus shipping.
#2 is date coded 251st day of 67. There is no pulley, but it has a nice reservoir with no dents, only one small ding near the return hole nipple. Price would be $75 plus shipping.
#3 has a date code of 299th day of 67. There is no cap, and it has an incorrect 5 3/4 inch diameter pulley that someone installed previously, and put a tack weld on the front corner of the shaft. They did not weld in the threaded hole, and the weld could be ground off and the pulley removed. The reservoir is dirty on the outside, but not dented badly, only one area with a vary small dent on the back where the bracket bolts on. Price would be $65 plus shipping.
#4 is date coded 262nd day of 68, and has the correct 7 inch pulley. The pulley had a dent on the belt groove, and was bent back. We straightened it up mostly, and it actually turned out pretty good. Would need more work to be nice. The reservoir does have dents at the typical area behind the bracket, and an indent where the return hose nipple is. These dents could be worked out if the reservoir is removed. Price would be $85 plus shipping.

No i hadn't fallen off the edge of the earth but my password was forgotten. Everything is fine downunder and have been spending my time taking my two challengers to various carshows (i do only take one at a time). I bought and fully restored my 1970 r/t challenger 440 4 speed ( # matching) plum crazy car in jan 2007 and finished the resto in nov 2008 and i bought my other 1970 r/t challenger 440 auto (original 383) as a complete finished car in jan 2012. On asking some questions i found out that the two cars came from the same importer in the gold coast...australia. I had purchased the plum crazy car direct from this importer and so on telling him that i had purchased the orange car he proceeded to inform me that he had purchased both these cars from the same family in california. Apparently the husband was a mechanic and that he had passed away and so they were selling the two cars.i would like to one day to try and find the family and show them the two cars back together again but now in oz. Love the cars so much that in august i run a mopars only car show and it just keeps getting bigger and better.my next desire is to attend a couple of mopar shows in the usa in the near future. Good to catch up and all the best for 2013. Regards carey

My car doesn't have A/C, so I plan to install a Classic Auto Air system. It's a '74 Challenger with 318/auto and 22" radiator.

I've heard that factory A/C cars all had a 26" radiator, so I'm wondering if I should change to the larger size - it needs to be replaced anyway.

Do these cars tend to run hot? We get 100+ degrees frequently in Kansas, so I want plenty of cooling capacity. If I go with the larger size, what else is involved? Can I modify the radiator support or will I need to replace it too? Will I need a shroud?

My car isn't a candidate for an accurate restoration anyway, so I don't mind modifying it. The important thing is to make it work well.

Thanks for any suggestions.
