What's this part?

so i'm looking at the rubber part inside my heater box, it's rubber not foam and i'm wondering what its for. It didn't come in the rebuild kit from DMT and there is no mention of it. Any idea what purpose it serves? I'm going to glue it back in place as it's still in good condition.

It’s there now but I’ve only done 2 boxes and I’ve never seen that in there.

it's a fairly early production box 10/69 is the build date on the car. It also lacks a metal support bracket for a hinge that i've seen in pictures for other boxes
