Prices were really crazy back then! 1988
Challenger RT 440 used selling for less then a Volare.
Then and again, a 70 Barracuda selling for $3500
How about a 73 Charger for $250; needing some work.

The Tradin’ Times and the Auto Trader, I bought every issue in the early to mid ‘80s as a young man. I didn’t keep any of them though.

That was the actual record from the Challenger in the ad. (never my car)

I took my A66 340 Challenger to Raceway Park in Englishtown only once; did a low 15 second quarter mile in totally stock form with about 70k on the car. Never measured mileage at the track, but messing around in town got me about 10 MPG.

I had a 440-6pk Challenger, automatic, 4:11 dana back in the day. That car on the other hand did low 14's quarter mile runs without a lot of tuning and was getting 5-6 mpg on quarter mile runs.
I had a industrial area street near my house that was pretty quiet that I measured off a quarter mile and tried a few runs late at night. I went through a tank of gas doing about 7-8 runs with the 6pk. Didn't measure the mileage in any kind of "formal" calculation. (Broke the left motor mount that night too)

Interestingly; found more information on the 440 Challenger listed in the ad above.

Apparently, the car was being sold by a dealer in California in the late 1980's and had this information posted in a listing with the car for sale.
Thought this was great to find on Pinterest
Wonder where the car is today?

A 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440, now for sale at Californiaclassix.com!

I did the same thing. We had a local sales paper called the Nickel Ads, that were free to pick up outside many of the grocery stores. I found my A-66 Challenger in that paper, and had the clipping for the longest time. Sadly lost it some time ago though.

Lol, If I knew then what I know now. The stuff we just threw away! In '79 (or around there) I gave $360 for a '71 340 Challenger RT that I traded even up to a friend for a '69 Barracuda S and '66 Satellite 6 months later. He never did pick up the Owners Manual and misc. glove box paper work.
