Has anyone tried this - Ammeter?

Just curious if anyone had tried this. My red wire is melted, the amp gauge is brown (white face overlayed), the light bulb socket is melted and the circuit board is discolored.

I have a donor cluster for parts, and I'm looking to redo the wiring and seal the windsheild to keep any water from coming in.

You have a short somewhere. I would check the harness and where it wraps around the IP to make sure that the wire insulation did not get rubbed off and the wire shorted. then check the harness under the hood that goes to the battery live terminal on the alternator.
