I have a friend, back in AZ, who is in the "Mopar Know." Especially big blocks! We recently had a discussion about oil filters. Not really which one was a better filter when it comes to filtration, but one that would not rub against the lower radiator hose with out adding more parts to that system. He claims there is only one, which is an industrial filter, that is "skinny" enough to clear the hose.

So...

In you mind and for a little discussion, how important is it to clear the filter from the hose? Just curious...

Sounds like he has the wrong lower hose. The factory had a little bend to raise it up above the filter. Probably lost that little detail in the aftermarket parts supply.

The lower hose never rubbed the filter in the “old” days.

It won’t help to add more heat to the oil for no good reason.

Agree with 413. You don't need a "skinny" filter if you have the correct hose. I have a factory Mopar hose for my '71 383 with factory 26" radiator and the closet spot has a good 3/4" clearance.

Yep, me too. I use the long Wix filter on my ‘71 383 with 26” radiator and have no clearance issues.

So what everyone is telling me is that I have been hosed with the wrong hose? I'm such a hoser!

As you can tell I have the same clearance problem.

Looks like it's time for a new hose regardless if I need one or not.

BTW - I'll let him know...

I agreed with Daves69. The 60659 hose, also made by Goodyear, is an excellent fit with the regular length and diameter Mopar oil filter on a big block. The clearance between the standard filter and the 60659 hose is on the order of 1¼ to 1½".

Not knowing any diff I used a Gates 20663 which has smaller bump out but does wrap around the filter w about 1/2 clearance using an FL-1A (sorry, force of habit)...
