speedometer drive gear

I could use a little advice again. Speedometer reading jumps around a lot. Had the speedometer worked on and new cable installed, but still the same. Could it be the drive gear ? And if so will the fluid pore out when I take it out to replace it.

Usually it would be the speedometer or the cable but go ahead and check the speedo gear since you think you have ruled out the others. Fluid will not flow out if the car is level, if you need to lift it, jack up the rear. Don't forget your jack stands.
