steering column

All,

my 70 challenger was originally a column shift car which at some point was converted to an automatic floor shifter. however, the column still has the P R N D 2 1 indicator thingamajig and the part that originally held the column shift lever on there. i want to change those two portions of the column. they seem accessible right where they are or do i need to completely remove the column from the car to accomplish that?

also, i plan to convert my car to a manual transmission, will the steering column need to be a different type?
