Assuming same brand & compound bias ply slicks & strong 440 with 5500 stall converter & 4.56 gear will 28 x 11 inch tread width or 30 x 9 wide tread give max hook & bite off the line ??

I think a slick that is 20 inches wide will give more bite than an 11 or 9 inch wide slick. :)

Thanks 71, but I've only got fender room for these 2 height- tread width combos. Taller-narrow or shorter-wider ...Which one gives best off line traction ???

No expert here, but my thinking is that the wider tire will give you more bite. It has more surface area contacting the track. You might want to check how much your final gear ratio changes between the two tire heights.

I was teasing you, I knew what you were asking....

A taller tire of the same width will have a bigger contact patch....However, I don't know which tire combination would have the bigger contact patch in this situation. It might come down to which diameter tire is best for your gear ratio. Rod

Thanks again 71,...yes, any larger od tire = usually less effective net torque coupling to pavement..I've always liked the classic '60's early '70's large OD 9 inch tire neatly tucked deep within the factory wheel well look. Maybe a call to M&H or such will share some info.

In my experience suspension set up has a lot more to do with traction than tire , , I feel you have too much gear a 4.10 or 4.30 will work better , 440s rev slower but make a ton of Tq so allowing the engine to rev slower & pull harder will make the car faster .
I ran a floating ladder bar set up in my 440 Duster , it would lift the front wheels 2+' on every pass & run 60' in 1.40 , I was using a 29x10" MH slick with 4.30 gears & a 4 spd launching at around 4500 rpm . couple this with a double adjustable shock & it will hook even on wet pavement , I know !!
Given the gear ratio the taller slick should work better for you

Thanks Psycho for your awesome duster set up info..My hot street some track application, not concerned with best top end or ET combo. Just need racers experience with 5500 rpm peak torque motor same converter stall & max traction hook between these specific tire size choice.

Nothing more than a 28"x10.5" tires needed with today's tire, suspension and power management technology. My buddy runs a 959" with 6 kits. Been a .092 60' @ over 213 in the 1/8 on 28"×10.5" tires in a G Body GM.
