Rear Springs # 3400044

These are the springs fitted to my car I noticed you can buy new spring leaves but not with this part number.
What are they?
Anyone got any info?

I just swapped out the springs in my '71 383 4 bbl Challenger convertible for a nice pair that came off a '71 383 R/T Challenger. The springs that were on the car, I believe to be the originals, have part #3400045 on both of them. This was odd to me because I would have thought that the left and right should have part numbers that were one number off from each other, 1 odd and one even. Even more odd is that the springs from the hdtp were both numbered 3400044.

Checked the '70-'71 parts catalog for those numbers,...........they are NOT listed?

Aftermarket leafs?

Same as my car and I checked the broadcast sheet and right and left springs seem to have the same 044 designation. The right hand box is hard to read. One thing that may be different is they are 4 1/2 leaf springs ? Standard spring may only be 4 leaf ?

They are definitely original but one thing I forgot to add was on broadcast sheet the suspension section has code S13. The car is a 340 4 speed and it has the torque box reinforcement plates also. Maybe this was all part of S13?

Good to know that the 044s were original to your car. Is yours a '71 also? Interesting to me is that There is no visual difference between the 044 & the 045.

Yes it is a 1971. It was imported to New Zealand in 1975 so the car has remained very original.
No Dodge Challengers in junk yards to rob parts off down here.
Are you sure both spring sets have 4 1/2 leaves? The half leaf is to the front to stop spring "wrap up"

The 2 in the foreground are the 045s that came off my vert and the 1 in the back is 1 of the 044s I installed.

I believe you. Just remembered that a lot of times the part number listed in the parts catalog is a "replacement part" and not necessarily the exact same p/n as the factory assembly line part. Maybe that could explain why there is no '044 or '045 listed in the parts book?

I have 2 TA's & an A66 340's both the TA's have 4 + the small 1 at the bottom all have the 043 but the build sheet shows 048 all are the same length both sides
Type this in on google dodge challenger build sheet pictures it will come up with around 30 build sheets line 5 shows the spring pack most Challengers appear to be 44 left 44 right

You are right they appear to be exactly the same. It seems from other posts the part numbers differ but the springs look the same.
Perhaps it was only the spring strength or the set height for different weight cars.
I assume a convertible with all the power lift mechanism weighs more than a hardtop in the rear.
I now know the springs I have are reasonably common.

I can't imagine the weight of the convertible being too much different from the hdtp, I'll have to check the service manual.

Normally same part, same part number even if that part is used on more than one model.
Why Chrysler have so many part numbers on springs does not seem to make sense.
I will have my original springs re tempered and set in the next year or so.

My 1971 340 4 spd Cuda hardtop is also coded for S13 Rallye suspension and 044 Lt & Rt leaf springs. Unfortunately, mine were swapped out at least 26+ years ago before I owned the car the first time so it looks like I'll be calling Detroit Eaton Spring when the time comes.

As I rebuild the suspension on my 70 A66 Challenger convertible, I'm looking at both original leaf springs that are numbered 3400044.

I also have the torque boxes welded in that all e body convertibles had.
I have old coil over shocks on the car that I added back in the 80's because the car sat low back then

Has anybody used the leaf additions that Tony Mopar sells to add to existing leaf springs? He offers two types:

1970-71 E-Body Heavy Duty Leaf Spring Lower Leafs,
with Numbers. Used on Hemis and 440s.
#3400024 & #3400034


AND

1970-1/2 AAR & T/A Leaf Spring Lower Leafs,
with Numbers. Used on All T/As and AARs.
#3400048


These could be added or replace a spring on your current units.
Anyone have thoughts on using these?

I searched for these on his website and couldn't find it.
What do they do, lift the rear?

The rear fender lip now is 1 in above the tire with 255-60-15 BFG's and the coil overs. Bought them in Sears, and installed in 1981.

They are old and probably have sagged
Fronts are 235-60-15
Car had a slight rake with stock HD springs and the shocks
