if you can fish out the broken half in the case just buy a new 1 inch x 1/4 dowel pin as a replacement ,, if you can't get the broken part out of the case reverse the cross pin and carefully drill a 1/4 inch hole in the opposite side of the case making sure the hole is centered in the opening...
check the endplay on the axles if ok it is time to pull the axles and check the bearings but bad axle bearings usually growl on turns , but this sounds like you have either broken spider or side gears in you carrier or if it is a cone type sure grip the spiders have welded themselves to the...
US Gear dropped their 742 gear sets years ago concentrating on the 489 case only - -and currently do not seem to be producing any domestic gear sets ( Ford . GM ,Chrysler ) since covid hit -- Richmond Gear exist in name only , unless there is some old stock sitting somewhere , as they were...
case half bolts on an original CHRYSLER POWER LOCK (clutch type)like the one shown in the picture are --- LEFT hand thread same as the ring gear bolts --- aftermarket power locks are right hand thread.
the shop did the gear set up - did you do the install of the rebuilt center section into your car or did the shop do that as well -- if you did the install -- did you notice if the shop did a pattern check with gear marking compound to make sure the gears were meshing properly . if not then for...
after 3 or 4 gear sets ,,spending $800.00 on a NOS gear set is not going to solve the problem -- the shop/shops being used obviously have no clue of what they are doing -- the gear set is not the problem ,, the mistake the shops are making is on setting the pinion depth and pinion bearing...
you will be close but bearings due vary so pinion bearing preload will change with the new bearing -- you will have to check it to make sure what preload you have ---- 20-25 in/lbs for new bearings -- 8-15 in/lbs for used bearings
nice work -- spot on patterns on the drive and coast -- you did an excellent set up as far as shim selection for the gear -- did you set the preload on the pinion bearings correctly and also on the carrier bearings,, if so you should be good to go.
i find it hard to believe that a gear set got out of the factory without going thru heat treating and now you are on your 4th set with the same noise issue -- something is wrong with the set up
this sounds like incorrect preload on the pinion bearings and as i stated in my other post try adding...
drive pattern looks good ,, but a little high (towards heel of tooth) try adding .003 to the pinion shim and take another pattern check --
--- what was the pinion bearing pre-load set at .
--- what was the backlash set to.
--- what was the pinion bearing preload set at --with new bearings it should have been 20-25 in/lbs rotating -- if preload was not set properly the pinion gear will not run true to the ring gear
--- gear pattern may be off due to incorrect pinion depth locating shim selection -- but without...
