Whats the difference between a 4 speed console and an automatic?

I understand the consoles are the same for the E body cars.
The 4 speed console has a cut-out on the drivers side near the gear lever and it uses a different top plate.
The cut-out is to fit the different shape of floor sheet metal fitted to a 4 speed car.

Steve340 is correct, 4spd tops are open on the left side, that said I put a few 4spds into E bodies and used the AT console without issue (didn't know they were different for years).

The true 4 speed consoles are worth quite a bit more than the auto consoles btw....and 70-71 are one year only pieces with 70 having a spot for seat belts and 71 ash try or vise versa
