The pictured piece covers the edge of the vinyl top that runs down the A-pillar as shown in the following image:

The specific piece you are holding is for the passenger side. The thin part slides under the drip rail trim, and the edge with the groove goes under the windshield corner trim. It is fastened with a screw in the hole.
