Greetings fellow E body enthusiast, I have a oil pan question.

I am in the process of rebuilding a 383 for my Cuda, when I bought the car it had a 440 in it, I wanted to put the original 383 back in it, I bought a good core motor but the oil pan is rusted out and needs to be replaced. The pan looks small and from what I have read is its a 5 quart pan, my question is should I go with a larger pan? and if so is there any fitment issues underneath that would be of concern?

What are your plans for the motor, lots of extra HP or more of a stock type rebuild? Probably not really needed on a mild build but certainly nothing wrong with going with a bigger pan either way. I thought about going to the larger pan when I rebuilt my 383 but then I figured my engine went about 175k miles just fine with the stock pan, so why bother. If you do upgrade I'd suggest the stock Hemi pan as opposed to some of the aftermarket deep pans which can be more for racing than street use and then you would have clearance problems.

Im just doing upgrades, roller cam, lifter and rockers, going to be a daily driver when done, the original oil pan looks so small but I came to the same conclusion as you that the stock one would be adequate, just looking for other opinions.

The main thing with motor oil is to change it regularly. If you need a new pan, 440 Source has some good ones! I've bought multiple pans from them. Also, the original pan was 4 quart (one quart in the big old oil filter) and the 440-6 and Hemi pans were 6 quart (one quart in the filter). So you're really comparing 5 quarts to 7 quarts.
