Gear hunting and major vibration in dash/wheel

Some more follow up on this one. Had some nice weather this weekend, so I decided to run the car shifting manually to see what would happen if I took the "gear hunting" out of the situation and held it in 2nd gear. The vibration was still there, which leads me to believe it isn't related to the...

Gear hunting and major vibration in dash/wheel

Fluids all look good. I felt the same way, wheel balance doesn't make sense... That said, I plan to check the kick down adjustment and if that doesn't help, the trans will likely come out in the spring for a rebuild.

Gear hunting and major vibration in dash/wheel

Thanks Chryco and Xcudame. Just to confirm, you both mention throttle pressure lever, I assume that is outside of the transmission and you are referring to the kick down at the carb, adjusting linkage at that location? Or should I be looking at the trans (with pan out) for throttle adjustment as...

Gear hunting and major vibration in dash/wheel

I just got the car back after replacing the B&M Shifter assembly with a stock OE 1970 slapstick and linkage. Prior to this, the car had a major issue in the rear which ended up being a bump stop issue, but it had made the vibrations and gear hunting less noticeable simply because it was a wreck...

Terrible ride quality - rear end clunks and bangs

Hi All, Follow up to this one, problem solved, was a bump stop issue that we re-looked at the clearance and took care of it. Rides much better now. Thanks for all your input!

Terrible ride quality - rear end clunks and bangs

What should I be looking at for suspension issues in the rear? Even driving over a sewer lid feels like I hit a pothole in the back end. A lot of clunking when over bumps, uneven pavement and just overall rough drive. Front end feels fine. Originally I thought that something was clunking in the...

    3.23 or 3.55 gears

That is funny, I was thinking of doing the same, and setting aside some 3.91. Like I mentioned, the car is very tame feeling now, but my wallet is sure happy.

    3.23 or 3.55 gears

Just an update for everyone. Turns out that she was running 4.56 race gears (car was inherited so not a lot known originally) with 26" tires. Helps explain a lot. Put 3.23's in and while it's not as rambunctious, it is getting much better mileage and great for cruising. Used to drive around the...

    3.23 or 3.55 gears

I am not sure on the stall, I will have to check into it. That is good to know the 3.23 are your favorite, that is what I am leaning towards now. I feel there wouldn't be enough of a noticeable difference only going down one step or so.

    3.23 or 3.55 gears

Thanks pschlosser for the insight. I would imagine the longest road trip would be 45 min. to an hour on the highway in this car, so winding it out that long shouldn't be to much of an issue other than the gas. Right now it is just to much, if I could see it in the 3200 RPM range at highway speed...

    3.23 or 3.55 gears

Currently running 3.91's with a 440-6 and 26" tires. Car hits around 4200 RMP at 60-65 (speedo is slightly off so not exactly sure). Looking at either 3.55 or 3.23. What are others experiences that have a similar setup. I am leaning to the 3.55 as it isn't really a highway car, might see highway...

    Late shift/Hard shift

Thank you pschlosser and Xcudame. I will take a look at cable adjustment and fluid level.

    Runs rough in Reverse Gear

You may be correct that the dash tach is not reading accurately. I do not have a secondary way to check RPMs etc. but is on my list to purchase. I will start getting on that ASAP and see what the actual RPM is. As far as idling higher, you think that it idling above 1000 RPM is worse off than...

    Runs rough in Reverse Gear

'71 440-6 727 Auto. Car idles good (about 850-900 RPM), idles fine in drive (about 750-800 RPM), drives well (besides the late shift issue, posted on another thread). In reverse however, the car seems like it is stumbling a bit, and is also very shaky/rattly. It reminds me of a bad motor mount...

    Late shift/Hard shift

The '71 Challenger has a hard/late shift going on. 440-6, 727 Auto with a LOKAR cable (I believe, not standard mechanical linkage for sure). It drives great, but 1st to 2nd is a little late and abrupt, shifts about 15 MPH, and usually have to feather the gas very lightly to tell it to shift. 2nd...
