Looking for a painted gas cap for a 71 Challenger. I learned recently that 71 caps are unique. 1970 and 1972-74 are different and will not work for me. See pics for examples.

Thanks for the ad!

I believe the spin-on gas cap pictured to the left for 1970, is the non-ECS gas cap.

14-86-35 CAP, Gas Filler Tube, WITHOUT VAPOR SEPARATOR

The 1970 ECS one looks like the 1971 cap pictured cap in the center. So a 1970 ECS version may work for 1971, too.

Further, the casting number #3404 511 is found on both painted and chrome varieties in 1970 and 71. I suspect that casting number is for the outer disc, some get chromed, painted do not. What varies is the locking assembly screwed to the disc, there being an ECS and non-ECS version for 1970.

You can mix and match the ECS assembly to a painted disc. I seem to recall someone having their chrome one glass-beaded to make it paintable.

I wonder about a 70 ECS cap working on a 71? I think the filler tubes are different and the tangs on the cap will not match.

Very odd how the 70-71 parts books list the cap as 14-86-35 on the exploded diagram but when you go to its part number section (at least my PDF version) it goes from from -32 to -38 skipping the fuel cap!

The '72 book has a part number listing for the caps as does the '73 and '74 parts books.

Anyone have the '70 only and a 70-71 with the part number listing?

Sorry Floyd, I tried....

You may be right, but note the dealer parts book, seems to list the same filler tube for the 1970 (w/ECS) and the 1971 car. Two examples of this for the Barracuda and Challenger.

And after June 1971 (pretty late in the 1971 model year) when they switched to the 1972 style. Note the same part numbers in this 1972 dealer parts book image

So a 1970 ECS painted cap may be just as hard to find, but I was hoping to give you some options for your 1971.
