Hi everybody getting ready to install a 426 Hemi in a 1973 Cuda was wondering if the stock 2x4 air cleaner (oval) would fit under the stock hood the engine will have the factory style intake manifold with Edelbrock carbs , any info would be appreciated!

Yeah, NO. With a flat. The budge hood more likely it would.

@6PKRTSE

can confirm.

Agree with above. No, with a flat hood. Yes, it will clear with a dual scoop Cuda hood if all stock parts otherwise. However, you will have to modify the base for the larger Edelbrocks 5-1/8" diameter carbs.
Mine as pictured above from Challenger RTA is obviously nothing as stock. So, nothing cleared the hood.

Thanks great info , I see theres a guy on the west coast that makes air cleaner bases to fit the Edelbrocks , and I did forget to mention it does have the bulge hood .

I seem to recall it possible to get the 426 hemi in a 1970 Barracuda body with a flat plain-jane hood. special order, of course, like maybe in a gran coupe? I say this, from memory, thinking I've seen one or two examples in the later 1980s at a car club in southern california. this would have been the "street hemi" with factory 2x4 intake and oval air cleaner. but I cannot say they were indeed numbers matching original. it was a big deal to some to have a "sleeper" when street racing for money, and the plain jane hood suckered the competition into a race for real stakes.

with the edelbrock carbs, I cannot say it would fit fine for the OP, but with OEM issued parts, I believe it fits.

Hi and Thanks for the info , I think your correct when you say that the Hemi air cleaner will work under the flat hood , remember a few months back when that black hemi challenger was found from some street racer back in the day , the article said that it had a flat hood as I recall

Hi, for what it is worth, I had the same question with my 440 and an Indy cross ram intake. As near as we can measure, the flat hood rises about 55mm from the side to the middle, the RT hood rises about 105mm. We measured that by placing a strip of masking tape on the front guard bolt flanges across the engine and a strip under the hood and measured under the hood to the inner skin. The strips of tape are the reference plane on both the front guards and the hood, if your carbs are higher than the rise in your hood then it will not fit, we just cut a neat hole in the flat hood.

Thank You for your input I appreciate it !!!

We started with a single 4bbl base and modded to a 2x4 for Edelbrock carbs and kept the slope on the base the same as factory so it will be level with the hood. After you make some measurements and decide if it fits under a closed hood you can move forward. Mine obviously will not fit so I will have my version of a 'Shaker', I think the filter and lid will be above and the base below or close to level with the hood.
