Hi,

I just joined tonight, but I have been visiting the site and have found previous posts really helpful. My 1973 Challenger is mostly complete after several years in professional restoration. I am doing the interior myself, and really am just getting started as I recently retired. Getting the dash system back together is a bit fussy but it is coming along.

Just FYI, this car was a 340 per the VIN, and the transmission was an automatic. I bought it as a nearly stripped parts car (no engine, trans, windshield, interior, etc.) to use in finishing the 72 318 base car I had since 1995, but my restorer felt that one was too far gone and the 73 a better choice. Definitely true, as the 73 had a complete heavy duty suspension to include Sure Grip rear, and was not rusted that bad - we ended up splicing a lot of the 72 into it, including my rebuilt 4 speed and rebuilt 318 (bored .30 over).

I also bought a 74 318 parts car with the 73 as part of the deal, which was loaded and had the A57 package. It was a basket case but I salvaged a lot from it, including the rallye dash which I will restore myself.

The restored 73 has no fender tag, unfortunately, so I do not know if it was actually an A57 car, but it will carry the DNA of the other two cars.

Glad to be here!

Welcome! Cool to see you saved another Gem. The 318 is a tried and true motor and perfect for a daily driver. Very Nice looking car, well done 🏝

Thanks! My restorer did a great job; the idea was to put together a driver and not a show car. The costs on the latter would have been astronomical, especially given what we had to start. I was against putting a vinyl top on at first, but he painted and sealed the roof first so hopefully roof rot won't be an issue.

As for the 318, I got this engine from a colleague I served with in the National Guard, as part of a trade. He was a determined racer who owned a 69 Barracuda notchback. He built this engine himself; it has a 3 angle valve job, it is blueprinted and has Keith Black pistons. I have the specs somewhere. My friend replaced it in his car with a more competitive 360.

This engine runs great. I have an Edelbrock 4 bbl and intake on it. I only ran this engine briefly after we swapped it in as I started disassembly of the 1972 Challenger I had, which unfortunately turned into very long project and even moving the car in pieces from one home to another over the years. I got a bit carried away and took that car down too far; I welded in a new firewall and cowl myself and was really proud of that until I realized such major structural replacement requires a jig. I also had pulled off the rotted quarters and roof and that certainly did not help, either. Experience is a harsh instructor.

Two years ago, after salvaging what I could from the 1972 I sold it along with the 1974 I had bought as parts cars to someone who clearly has the skills to build one car out of the two. He also got all my extra parts as part of that sale so he should be well on his way.

Welcome to FEBO. I see you have a back up in the driveway. Just to keep the anxiety at bay.

Yes, my 2013 R/T Classic daily driver/errand runner. I think you pegged the situation correctly, this car kept my sanity intact given the never-ending saga with the original. I am still amazed I got my wife on board with it, but she likes to drive it once in a while. It is totally stock and really very quiet with the original exhaust; that may be the reason she likes it. That and the deal we got on it at Carmax...
