Challenger dash speaker size

I've read many are against modifying the dash frames to accommodate newer type speakers which I am not.

is that opening specific to a car option such as the AC or something else or people just want to keep the originality?

the dash frames (under the dash pad) are the same, more or less, for both A/C and non-air cars.

as long as the speaker grill can cover the speaker, you may be free to tweak the dash frame sheet metal however you see fit to get those speakers to fit in place. you can see how much depth you have to worth with, inspecting the opening from the top and bottom. if you have an A/C dash, the ducting is plastic and can bend and deflect a 1/4-inch or so.

given how loud a performance vintage muscle car can be, inside the cabin, fidelity is not something some of us lose sleep over. it's not the ideal car in which to park with a date, listen to soft jazz and make our moves. that said, there isn't much some WON'T do on the front seat of a rumbling thrilling vintage muscle car!

I have a 3 speaker dash also and my speakers were dry rotted. So I bought speakers that I thought would fit, they didn't. Mostly the problem is the size of the magnets on the back of new speakers. The original speaker magnets are small. The new speakers were also to tall for the speaker grills to fit over them. The center speaker sat so proud that the speaker grille was above the dash pad about 1/8". The center speaker magnet hit the ductwork for my defroster and the L/R speaker magnets hit the dash frame.

So I had my speakers repaired to like new condition and installed them. If you can, have all your defrost ductwork and the speedometer cluster installed and then try to fit the new speakers to see what will need to be adjusted or trimmed.

Just out of curiosity, can you actually hear those speakers?
Seems like any kind of aftermarket exhaust will drown out anything but an amplifier driven 6x9.
Not to mention they are angled up and away out the windshield.

No, I can't really hear the front speakers unless the car is off. Had I known that, I probably would have not spent any money on speakers for the front. I also do not have an amplified system.
