LOUD POP POST SHUTDOWN FROM EXHAUST

Lots of suggestions and comments going on here, so I'll add a couple more. You say it doesn't happen when initial timing is at 20*. If it runs ok and doesn't spark knock under acceleration, just leave it at 20*. Do you get the popping sound if you shut off the engine in gear?

Okay I took everybody’s suggestions and tried all. I got it to idle around 720 rpms in gear at 18* btdc after messing with the carb. Total is 2700 rpms at 37*. With vacuum advance hooked up it’s 55* btdc. NO POP from the exhaust on shutdown. I did find a small exhaust leak on the drivers side head pipe that I will tackle next. New question though. For the most part in gear at idle it hangs out around 720 rpms. Occasionally it will drop to 600 rpms at a stop light. Is that normal? Thanks for all the inputs everyone.
