Nut size for steering column shaft on 1973 dodge challenger

What size is the nut for the steering column shaft on 1973 dodge challenger? I thought that it was a 9/16 x 18 but it won't go past 1 thread.

Are you referring to the output shaft of the steering box to the pitman (steering gear) arm? If so, my notes say that is a 1/2-20 castle nut.

In my experience, when you carefully inspect the threads and the diameter of the nut, right next to the threaded shaft of the proposed target, it become obvious if the nut should fit the shaft. Unlike switching between metric and SAE, if it looks like the threads and diameter are a match, they usually are.

Tks for reply. No, I am talking about the other end. I need a nut to secure the steering wheel/crush can to shaft.

the threads are fine and the 9/16 x18 only goes in 1 or so thread. My understanding is that Chrysler part number is 6029945, which is the nut in question is a 9/16x20. That is what I am going to try if I can find one as they are hard to get, I am told.

That is a special nut, just for that purpose. My notes show Grade 8, 1/2-20 (3/4 socket) self-locking and 11/32 thick.
I don't remember if it MUST be that thin. If so, you may have to grind a thicker (store-bought) one down.

I just checked, and my data was confirmed on a 1970 barracuda. maybe it's different for 1973.
