Steering coupler cross pin removal

Does this pin have to be pressed out. I have beat on with a hammer and not budged it? Does new one have to be pressed in?
It’s a split spring steel pin . A good
punch and hammer normally does it . Try turn 180 and go the other direction !

Hold a heavy block of steel like the end of a ten pound sledge hammer on the bottom side against the coupler so the shaft won't bounce. You lose a lot of your kenetic energy because the shaft is bouncing and your are not getting a solid enough hit. Basically support the shaft coupler from the bottom side while you strike the pin! It's easier on the shaft and you too!
