trunk weatherstrip

I'm replacing the trunk weatherstrip on my 70 challenger. The trunk has these notches along the sides. Are they normal? will the weatherstrip alone cover them and prevent leaks?

The notches were made at the factory. Weatherstrip will cover them and seal fine.
