I drove a daily manual for 20yrs, that was enough "fun" for me.

I bought mine with a 340 and 727 in it and originally kept them with the 727 being built with a full manual valve body. The manual shift automatic was fun but after a couple years I collected the parts and swapped in the four speed- NO comparison IMO, the manual four speed is WAY more fun to drive!

Likely stems from the fact that in the early to mid 60s, auto transmissions were somewhat slushy and weak. The 4 speed was the hot ticket for drag strip performance, at least until auto transmission technology improved. It takes a LOT of skill and finess to launch a manual transmission car, especially with street tires. Even after the 3 speed autos came around, road racers still needed the control of the manual transmission.

Compared to other makes, Mopar blessed us with the nearly indestructible 833 4 spd and 727 automatic transmission! We can count our blessings and remember that even though our cars cost a little more to maintain, they last a lot longer!

The push button 413/426 maxwedge automatics were tough to beet! The maxwedge and the 426 hemi lead to the development if the 833 4 spd because no other manual transmission would hold up behind them! Then there was the short lived (but effective) clutchflite! Who else had an automatic like that? Many of other brand racecars ran 727 transmission behind their engines. I think we're lucky we have the best manual and automatic transmissions! Heck, we've got the best muscle vehicles out there!

Apparently back in the day quite a few drag racers used the 833 in their non Mopar race cars. Back when El Paso still had a 1/4 mile track a friend of mine (a Chevy racer) told me that he had a friend that would buy any spare 833s that I had.
