I installed a new cam from hughes engines. The mechanic says the passenger side of motor is making a lot of lifter noise. There is no play in there but still has that tapping sound. Is there anything else that can make the lifters noisy. He says everything is tight and oil is traveling as it should.

Is it confirmed tappet noise from the valve train, or some other?
what do YOU think about the noise?
After the camshaft change, are you still on the OEM hydraulic lifters, that pump up, self-adjust, and close the pushrod gap?

If the noise begins with the installation of the new camshaft, and it wasn't present prior, I'd pursue a path where those who did the camshaft work will need to resolve this issue. Otherwise, we may be able to advise.

Is this some kind of common or known problem associated with the 440 engine and a camshaft change?
No.
This sounds like a "Troubleshooting 101" kind of problem.

I had a cam, lifter, rocker change from hughes about couple years ago. I didn't like the aggressive cam at the time but dealt with it for couple years. I just had new cam and lifters put in that hughes engines recommend that worked with the previous set up. Just a less aggressive cam that now has vacuum for my brakes.
The previous cam also made the lifter noise, just wasn't as loud. It's the same tapping noise as before, just a little louder. FYI it's a flat tappet cam.
Just looking for some advice on what causes the tapping, since everything is tight and looks good.
Thank you

What are the specs of the old and new cam. Rocker ratio and other build info. There are some good builders here that might give an explanation.

What oil weight are you using? Most new lifters will make noise when it's first started up, but the noise should go away once everything is broke in and lifters fill up with oil. Certain rocker arms can also make a lot of noise as well. Especially adjustable rockers that aren't adjusted correctly.
Contact Hughes if the noise persists!!

I will contact hughes. Thanks.
They recommend 10w30.

That's like the bare minimum. I like breaking parts in with 30 weight myself. Or 20w-50. But that's just me. Please let us know what they say.
