I noticed it had been signed by Richard Petty.
Have you tried contacting the Mecum Auction House? They may be able to help you.

I had it signed by Petty - a great man.
I haven’t tried Mecum as they usually are not very helpful unless your selling or buying a car.

Well Mecum did reach out to the buyer for me but he had sold it, they wouldn't give me his contact information so the trail has gone cold.

You should be able to put the VIN out there and the DMV's can tell you what state it is in and start narrowing it down that way...even if you have to call the DMV in each state?
