I just looked in the parts guide and there is no retainer / backing plate that goes behind it , I just assumed there was supposed to be one . just the two speed nuts which are available aftermarket . thanks .

Yes. One of them has 3 pins. The emblem has a slight bend in it. Probably from whenever removed it. Doesn't show up at all in the picture.
