Guys I pick up a couple of big blocks the other day. One a 2/1969 cast E383 short block. The other a 10/1972 cast J440 HP.

Both blocks had the main caps removed but I also found a container that had 2 sets of caps plus 2 extras. One of the extra looks like it spun a rod and has quite the lip in it.

Looking at the 2 matching number sets they are identical. Anyway to figure out which set belong with which block?

One set are all stamped 25 the other are stamped 28.

The 383 crank has smaller journals so place them into the block to see which match up.

You could fit the caps to the block and torque the bolts down then with your fingernail check for a step or mismatch between the cap and block tunnel where they meet. This will be a quick way to see if the caps belong to the block running a bore gauge through the tunnels would be more accurate or if you have a crank and bearings install them and check if it turns smoothly.

There is quite a difference between the crank journals 440 will have a bigger bore. U can see it by eye. Kim
