We have been battling getting the 4 speed back in the 383 for the life of me It won't go in we have rotated the engine while wiggling it in but what the heck never had this much trouble sucks being on your back.

What's the trick here?

The Tranny came out of the setup? Did you replace the Clutch plate and did you get the right spline clutch? When I blew the clutch on my 68 Road Runner 383 4 speed, I went to a dealer and he gave me the 18 spline clutch plate instead of the 23 spline plate. Had to go back and get the right one. Just something to keep an eye on.

In another thread with this problem, I use B engine head bolts, remove just the head of the bolt using 2, and screw into the bellhousing to help line up the tranny.

When I was younger, I would leave pressure plate loose so the clutch disc could move around, that was when I was too cheap to buy an alignment tool
