$700 (obo)
(Note: I also have a ring & Pinion set of 3:91 gears that were pulled from this unit last Fall for sale in a separate note. I would adjust pricing if a single buyer were to purchase everything together.)
Gents,
(I thought I had posted this previously, but must have failed do so correctly.)
I have a complete 489 sure-grip third members with a nearly new set of Dr. Diff 3:23 gears looking for a new home. I thought this unit might have suffered some internal pinion/pinion bearing damage when the pinion yoke nut started to back off while driving down the hwy in April which led to a gradual vibration and eventually some "bad" clunking sound when coasting. (The local moron who I had do the work, either a) didn't properly torque the nut, b) failed to either lock-tight or peen the nut in place, or c) some combo of (a) and (b). So,...I opted to purchase a complete new third member from Cass(he's great to work with..) at Dr. Diff which was installed recently and works fine. When we pulled this unit, it appears that no damage occurred to either the pinion or pinion bearings (though we didn't fully break it down.) when the yoke nut is snugged down the unit turns freely and smoothly by hand with no indication of any bearing damage. (I probably spent $1500 dollars on a complete new unit that was not required.)
So, I have a complete extra third member. (it is set for 30-spline axles and has a 29-spline pinion shaft.) As per the pics, the only visible indication that the pinion nut became loose is where the pinion head came into contact with the sure-grip housing scuffing it lightly. My recommendation would be to replace the pinion bearings/crush block and re-verify the gear mesh before any hard-use. Otherwise, this is an original 489 casing that I pulled from my 73 340 rally challenger.
