AAR steering gear box

Did all AAR and TA come with "TA" gear box or only the ones optioned with power steering. I'm seeing some discussions about it and just wondering. I have 2 projects I'm working on. 1 has the TA gearbox-1 has regular gearbox. Previous owner said gearbox was intact(original) with car.
What's up?

Quick ratio “TA” box was optional. You could get manual steering, power steering, or quick ratio power steering

I'm just assuming/guessing, so a build sheet would be the only way to see what the car came with?
This is only information I'm curious about. I don't have any build sheets for my cars.

All TA and AAR have quick steering gear box only that year, But in 1972 They put the same gear box in all the ebodies

Trying to do some research and came across this post. I'm still just a bit confused. My build sheet for my AAR has a "4" typed into the box under the power steering "77" so would this be for the Quick Ratio PS or just regular PS? I do not have a TA box in my AAR so this is why i'm researching. Thanks.

That is not correct for all AAR and T/A... the car could be ordered with either manual, regular ps, or fast ratio ps.

Also, in fact, the '71 e-bodies (with 340 engines only) could be ordered with fast ratio ps.

I have several sheets with 7 in the power steering slot. So 77. Both 70 and 71.
Only one AAR or T/A with the 4.
Will continue to look.


@Mesmerized63 Is your build sheet anywhere on line for viewing?

The quickest <pun intended> way to find an E-Body option for a 1970 is to search HERE.
Just hit CTRL+F to open the Find search box, type the option code, in this case S74, and hit ENTER or Return.
Answer: S74 Power Steering Quick Ratio 12:1
The window stickers showed S74 POWER STEERING-FAST RATIO

I have numerous broadcast sheets for A53 Trans Am package Cudas and Challengers showing manual steering (no numeral in the S77 box), power steering (7 in the S77 box), and Power Steering Quick Ratio 12:1 (4 in the S77 box).
FWIW - The standard steering was manual steering. The power steering and the power steering quick ratio were optional at $90.35. Quite a sum for 1970.
Here are two T/A window stickers. Curious enough, the Trans Am package cost $865.70 while a 426 HEMI engine cost just $778.75 in a Challenger. The A53 package was called out differently on AAR window stickers. The BS23 model became PLYMOUTH AAR CUDA-2 DOOR HARDTOP at $3,966.00 and the the A53 code showed no cost but was essentially $802.00 more than a comparable BS23 PLYMOUTH CUDA-2 DOOR HARDTOP at $3,164.00. The HemiCuda option added $871.45 to get the 426 HEMI engine.

No S77 or S74 which is standard manual steering for this Challenger T/A.

Great information, thank you. Another question.... How do you remove the center cap on woodgrain steering wheels? I have changed out a rim blow wheel before and assume it is the same but I don't want to be prying the center cap off if that isn't the correct way to remove.

Phillips screws on the back of the spokes.

The center cap simply pops off. It has a circular portion with twelve (12) individual spring clips that retain it on the horn adapter.
Here is a video showing disassembly of the steering column.
The below center cap is for an S83 - Rim Blow steering wheel but the retention is the same for the S81 - Standard Woodgrain three-spoke steering wheel.
