i found replacement chrome piece for around 70$ but it looks like the piece is welded onto the baseplate. How hard is it to replace this? Here is my original

On mine it was real simple. I believe mine was held together by 6 rivets. I just carefully grinded off the rivets from the bottom side. The new ones have threaded holes and screws that go where the rivets were.

You can also pop out the plastic without too much trouble clean & reinsert.
Dont use any thinners or superglue on the clear plastic or it will craze
not all the replacement units have slapstick on the indicator plate.

Thanks for the help guys for the info, here's a pic of the new one so I assumed I reused the plastic part with the gears on it. Is that how it works b5?

If I'm recalling correctly, once I grinded off the rivets and took the chrome bezel apart from the shifter mechanism the plastic gear selector piece simply fell out. I cleaned it up with some rubbing compound and reinstalled with the new chrome bezel.
