I have input shaft play with clunk, wiggles over an 1/8” left to right 1972 a904 in a challenger, I’ve been chasing a vibration under load. Found a deformed flex plate. I’m trying to figure out how deep I need to dig. This is Lilly my fault the trans was rebuilt 12 years ago but has less than 1000 miles. Any input helpful is that much side play normal? Is there a way upload a video on this?
 
Sounds like the front pump bushing is shot! Probably wasn't replaced during to rebuild. If it was me (assuming the transmission is out because of you describing the play in the front shaft), I'd tighten the front band snug, remove the front pump, replace the bushing, seal and rings (2 rings if I remember correctly) in the front pump. Then put it all back together and obviously install a new flex plate. Keep in mind this is a quick and dirty cheap solution.
 
That’s where I’m headed, I don’t have any transmission experience. Just wasn’t sure if I was trying to replace something that had that kind of tolerance
 
I Have to think EXCUDAME is spot on. It is hard to diagnose a problem off hand.


I try to think one step beyond. What was the cause. Normal wear and tear, a weight come off converter, or the thrust bearings going bad. Been there seen it. Just my 2¢. just about worthless

I’m not certain of the cause, I found the flex plate to be warped, thought I may not have fully seated the torque converter, but when I unbolted the converter I came free, it wasn’t compressed into the motor. I guess what I’m trying to figure out is if any slot in the input shaft is proper I have it apart. It seems like the bushing is worn it’s smooth but input shaft seems to have more play side to side than I would think it wants. Just seeing if I need to dig into anything else before I put it back together.
