Cooling help please

Hi all, we finally had some good weather in Ireland, 30c 85f , brought car out , 72 barracuda 440, temp started up to about 200, switched on electric fan, slowly reached about 220/230. Could feel gas starting to boil, engine getting too hot.
I'm looking at how to drop temp, had a look at rad cap but it has no markings, gonna order a new 16psi cap, maybe flush rad . And fill new coolant. I did notice rad never had a cowling , would this def help?

Shroud for sure, but is that coolant as rusty as it looks or is it an orange coolant variant?
If that's rust then the entire coolant system, including block/heads needs to be flushed, not just the radiator.
Fair warning... once you go down that path don't be surprised if coolant leaks show up.

Hi, will check electric fan if push or pull, not a new occurance, always happens in hot weather . Up to about 20c is ok with electric fan on, mostly overheats when stuck in traffic

Looks to be an aluminum radiator. That wouldn't cause the rust problem. The rust might be blocking the radiator now. It probably would flush out. I would take it out to do that. The block itself needs to be flushed. I would connect the two hoses together and put a flushing agent in an run a little then let it sit. Maybe rinse and repeat and flush. Off hand not thinking of one that works better than the other. Baking soda is a good cleaner. Don't forget about the heater core.

Yep coolant looks a bit rusty prob from lying up for months , what's best way to flush system, thanks
+1 for installing a shroud. I am not too keen on those flexfans either. Get a 7 blade 18" OE style if you can. They move a ton of air and combined with a shroud will help a lot with low speed/idle heat issues. I used a product called thermocure to flush my system. It did a great job for removing the rust. Be sure to have a lot of distilled water on hand to flush the thermocure and garbage out of your system after flushing. You will also want to remove the drain plugs on the side of the engine as well. It is a messy job but your engine will be happy with you for doing it! After you use it, I recommend you remove your radiator and turn it upside down and put a hose in the outlet and backflush that radiator. Also, be sure to run the proper amount of antifreeze & water to protect your system.

You need a real fan , 5 or 7 blade not that junk & a shroud for sure , the electric fans usually block more air flow that helping out

That flex fan has to GO! And yes, you really need a shroud. The best set up is a real fan with the short Jaguar clutch. And I am not a fan of the electric fans. The only ones that I have seen actually work are the Mercedes repops with Howie's controller. But they draw a LOT of amps and you need a system that will handle it.


When running, you can take a temp gun and go around the radiator to see if some areas are cooler than others. If so, that indicates blockages. That rusty water certainly means that you need to flush your block.
