Camshaft, valve springs, carburetor(4bbl), intake, exhaust manifolds. These are the main differences.

Thought I might mention that the 1971 383 2bbl used a externally balanced cast crankshaft and the 383 HP was a forged crank.

I think all 440's are externally balanced but I see what your saying Cast vs forged

Ouch, that will open a hugh can of worms.

67-72 440s are forged internally balanced. 70-72 6bbl are forged with an external balance. 73 has some forged internally balanced and the HP engines have 6bbl HP rods and are forged with a externally balanced crank. 74 and later uses externally balanced cast cranks. All years of 440's with manual transmissions are internally balanced forged cranks. This being GENERALLY true, I'll bet there are oddball engines in some years.

Good info there Learning more everyday. I have a 69 E-440 non-HP that was installed in a 70 model year car and I also have a 70 F-440 that I am currently putting in my barracuda both have a big harmonic balancer mounted externally on the engine.

1968-1969 factory 2bbl 383 was approx 9.2 to 1 compression
1967-1969 factory 4bbl 383 was approx. 10 to 1 compression
1970 factory 2bbl 383 was approx. 8.7 to 1 compression
1970 factory 4bbl 383 was approx. 9.5 to 1 compression
By 1971 all 383's were down to approx. 8.5 to 1 compression when they left the factory.

I just got done rebuilding a totally stock 71 383 2 bbl. It had a forged crank and internally balanced. I didn't think they made the switch to cast crank until the 400

definitely cast crank in the 71 2bbl cars. my 71 coronet had a cast crank with a different damper then my 65 steel crank 2bbl 383. also the heads are 346 casting. oh and like cop car cranks, no finished pilot hole for the throw out bearing so no 4 speed swaps on a 2bbl motor without a little work. these motors have an E stamped on them btw...
