Ignition Switch Rotates too Freely

I have a 1971 power steering column in my car 1973. The switch does not move sharply from one stop to the next when rotating toward start. It really just flops around. This was not an issue until recently, but I have noticed I now have to jiggle it to get the car to actually start - sometimes I get no ignition initially.

Does this sound like a switch that is giving up the ghost or is it possible to adjust or repair it? I have seen the column dissassembly videos and some of the threads on here. I may have missed a thread on this particular ignition switch issue.

Sound like timme to replace the switch itself?

If you have the tools, you should take the steering column apart to see whats going on. Like halifaxhop states you may need to replace the ignition switch. So either way the column will need to be taken apart.

Thank you. I figured I would have to go there. I am trying to get my brakes working right so this will be the next project. Well, the horn is going off continuously so I have to sort that out even before the brakes - I am hoping I have the horn button pushed down too far and stuck or something. I wasn't having any problems until I took the steering wheel trim off (it's a 71 wheel).

Is it hard to find a 72-74 ignition switch? I have to start hunting for one.

I don't think its difficult to find an 72-74 ignition switch. I had bought mine years ago from Ebay but Classic Industries and Year One probably sell them.
