Would it be okay to use a smaller engine oil filter instead of the stock sized bigger one?

if so, anything else I need to consider to offset a smaller filter?

I must've blocked it out of my brain because i don't recall how much of a hassle it was to remove the engine oil filter from my 70 challenger (360 crate). I have TTI headers and not much clearance for access. Other than puncturing it and then working it off I could not get that thing off with any of the filter removal tools i have.

Most header installations almost demand the shorter filter due to clearance. If your filter is that hard to get off then it may have been tightened too much when installed.

Yea, use the screw driver through the can trick to get it off, if you have the space. You may need to detach the header to get in there, not pretty. But then. Never, ever, EVER, make it too tight when replacing it. in fact, under-tightening it (so you may see a leak and need to go under at a later time and give it a quarter twist) always feel worth it, compared to the muscle to get the old one off again.

I always have always used vasoline on the oil filter rubber seal on all my vehicles even lawn mower and it seals good and comes off easier. I learned this when I was a tech at a mopar dealership
