Questions on 440 shaker base plate

Hello I'm new to this site,
My question is about changing my 70 cuda 440 4 barrel to a shaker. I have a edelbrock performer intake and 850 Holley. My concern is the height of the intake. I have been told by a shaker vendor that if I used a 383 shaker base it would drop it down. Can anyone help. Thx

I do not know if the bases are different heights but I do know you do need a low rise manifold.

I didn't want to change the intake manifold if possible. If there is anyone that has run into this and have a fix I would appreciate it. Maybe I can modify the air horn on the base plate.

Is your manifold a Performer or a Performer RPM?
There is quite a difference in height.
A Performer is around stock height and would be OK, the RPM would be too tall.

I think it's the rpm because it looks much higher than stock. Do you know what carb pad height is on a stock manifold? I could figure out the difference if I knew.

I do not know it but you can find it on the Edelbrock website.
I have a Shaker car and there is not much leeway on the height of things before the bubble hits the hood.
I can tell you the base Performer will work because I have one on my car, but my engine is a 340.

Having a little problem understanding the measurements and where u are measuring from.I have a 440/850 Holley and edelbrock performer rpm. I've been told that I could use a 383 base and assembly and that would drop it down lower. But how far down I don't know.

If I look at the measurements it seems like the 383 would sit up higher or am I crazy...

Based on the earlier measurements kindly provided by floyd all those bases only differ by 1/2 an inch.
A Performer RPM would be an inch or more higher than stock.
I am not 100% sure but I believe any of the stock bases will be a problem with your current manifold.
Either you alter something to give you clearance or change the manifold.

I think your right Steve about the manifold. I currently have my car in a car capsule in the garage. I'm going to measure everything and make a decision. My car looks good with the double hump hood but would look and function better with a shaker. I could save 4,000 dollars by leaving it the way it is.
I'll let u know what I decide.

Hi Dave,I was doing some searching on another site and I think Floyd and yourself might have done some fabing on a hemi base plate. It looked like someone bought a holley drop down air filter and fabed it onto the base. They make them in a couple different sizes. 1" 1 1/2". That would probably do it as long as it doesn't interfere with fuel lines etc. Thanks for your feedback.

Just my thoughts and I own a factory Shaker car.
The Shaker is time consuming to remove and a pain in the ass to take off over and over if you tuning the carburettor. Worse if the carb is flooding and fuel is everywhere.
Luckily this has not happened to me but I dread it.
You can barely see the carb with the Shaker on.
I doubt the Shaker works any better air flow wise than a well thought out performance air filter and it would let you see the carb and be easy to get off.
But damn they look good.

Thanks that's a big help. I also have a hei distributor that sits real high. Too many variables if u know what I mean.

Agree with Steve340 about visibility of the engine with the scoop on. I usually run with a standard air cleaner when I’m bringing the car out of hibernation. It’s a lot easier to deal with a problem without having to deal with all the bubble components.

Nice clean engine bay. I seen a thread awhile back that you might have been involved with. It was about fabricating a holley drop air cleaner to a shaker base plate.

Well fd, I've not modded any hemi bases. I do use a 440 six pack shaker base (less the adapter) on my '69 Barracuda. It required only a small bend to clear the 2 speed wiper motor nose sticking out.
