Remove mirror glass?

Anybody know a way to safely remove this glass from its housing? The housing is of course loose, I assume a friction clip on the inside that could be fixed somehow.

I've disassembled a few of the optional sport mirrors to fix this problem. I would try soaking the glass in lacquer thinner or gasoline for a week or so to hopefully loosen up the adhesive and then after rinsing & drying use a heat gun and very carefully pry the glass out. For me it was about a 50/50 success/failure rate on getting them out without breaking or chipping. If it does break it's not the end of the world. I found that Rock Auto carries replacement mirror glass pieces cut to fit for certain vehicles, not for e-bodies but what I did was get one for I think an early 70s Dodge pickup or van and then took it to a local glass shop to have it cut down to fit the e-body mirror plate.

On the sport mirrors this is what the problem is, drill out the loose rivets that attach the metal plate to the ball socket, and then replace with screws to tighten the joint back up to where it should be.

What adhesive did you use for the new glass?

It's been a while but I believe I just used clear silicone. Four blobs go on those corrugated circles in the above picture. It couldn't hurt to use something specifically formulated as a glass adhesive though.

My 73 sun visors do not have screws either. The rod is just held in by friction. You just need to pull the visor opposite the shaft and the visor will come off.

Friction, some sore of spring clip? My interior is burnt orange, so I'm very careful taking things apart.

Visor is screwed in, but there is a plastic cover that would hide the screws.

Less than 24 hours soaked in gas, it just fell out. Outstanding!

When you remove the rivets, are you having to drill a hole for the screws? Self tapping screws or are you running a tap in there? Loctite when done?

The posts are the rivets, only the very top is removed. 1/8th bit only 1/4 inch deep, and had to shorten the screws I rummaged through my stash for.

Sorry, I should have more specific. For my 73, the visor assembly is mounted the the windshield frame at the roof with screws. The visor itself is just slid over the shaft that is internal of the visor assembly. I cannot see inside my old visors to see if it is spring clip(s) inside but, the tension, as I pulled my old visor was constant until it was off of the shaft. If it was a spring clip I would assume the tension I felt would have been less once the clip was released. I removed the visor assembly from the car and did this on a bench.

I see.. I don't have those covers to hide my screws. That's a mystery for sure. Thank goodness no one makes those parts and that the plastic is probably not brittle.... Just a little sarcasm there.

They just pop on/off, just pry down gently with screwdriver.
I bought repos in blk a long time ago, not sure if they offer different colors.
