Mix this as a 50-50 mix. It is about 50% strength phosphoric acid . Doing so will make it 25-30% mixture. Just what is needed. Mix it as you need it.
Use in an open area and or PPE. I use a trigger sprayer to apply. Makes a fine mist you don't want to breath.
Of course remove any heavy scale or rust.

Always add acid to water, not water to acid, to prevent dangerous splashes and reactions. This method ensures that the heat generated during mixing is safely absorbed by the water.

I would use Ospho for that. A quart bottle is less than $20 at the local hardware store and should be more than enough for your floor boards engine compartment.

Thanks. Im learning there are a number of phosphoric acid brands that could do the job but it comes down to how well the metal is prepped that makes all the difference. Thanks again. Your info is very helpful.

o I dont need an additional sealer before I put on the color coat. is that right?

Remember that rust is iron oxide. You need oxygen (which water has) to turn steel back into iron oxide. Chemical conversion of the iron oxide like Rust-Mort does work! Once treated and the metal is changed, it can be primed and painted (which seals out oxygen) and will no longer oxidize/rust.

I have a flat tire on my truck. So I left it sit where it is.
So went and bought another truck. A neighbor 500' away had this for sell. Rough on the edges and really rough underneath. The neighbor had a stack of maintenance receipts from new.
Pulled the bed and went at it. dropped gas tank, exhaust, chipped heavy scale off. Use a 40 grit flap disc the spayed acid let dry. Then wiped with 80 grit to remove the black iron oxide flake. Primed, painted with a marine paint I just happened to have. Finished off with bed liner.

Maintenance:

Black iron oxide flakes.

A lot of us understand this.

In my opinion the phosphoric acid works best for me. At $20 a gallon and diluted it make 2 gallon.
