seat belt retractors

Hi Folks
Seat belt retractors on my 1973 Cuda don't extend properly- keep getting locked part way up. They are the original covered type and they don't seem to come apart for repair. Anybody else have this problem and what is the best solution to solve it?

I've experienced this for years. My solution is to pull the seatbelt steady and in a wide arc. Seems to work for 35+ years. But, yes, it can be a pain sometimes. Especially when giving someone a ride in the passenger seat!
