Slap Stick Question

There was nothing missing...I installed the original T handle and the shifter acted the same....I'm sure I'll have to go under the console, or under the car...,

I cannot think of any way the linkage, under the car, could impact the need/function of the button when shifting between D and 2. So you won't be on your back. :)

I think that will all be up top, under the console, in the gear shift unit. Possibly the button, and/or that pistol grip is a factor, but it's hard to say.

I had a very similar problem when I played with my shifter before I knew what I was doing. The slap stick mechanism may be dirty and not allowing the movement of the shifter to seat in the correct slots for drive and 2. I took mine apart and cleaned and relubricated it. Once out the car, you can operate it in your hand. It should move as expected and not go from drive to 2nd without the button. Also make sure your spring for the assembly is connected properly. Sorry I don't have a picture but I know someone here does.

As long as your shifter goes into park and 1st the linkage at the transmission, under the car, is probably in the right spot.

Not sure if this is much help but here is a pic of my slapstick spring Rondo73 may be referring to

Yes, That is the spring.
There is a spring in the shaft that the T-handle slides over that could be not allowing the button to fully retract which could keep the mechanism from working properly.
I would just take the handle off and actuate the shifter to see if it works as it should.
