What year 440?
What was the heads cc amount change?
Lastly, what purple cam did you use?

Certainly looks like fun! Enjoy!

It is a stock 1975 440 with the stock 8.2 to 1 compression it had stock heads. Im not sure of the cam size it was already installed when I bought the car pretty choppy though.

You need to be very careful with cam selection on low comp engines as you can builld a lot of dynamic compression using short duration low over lap cam designs . Looks like the RPM intake as well !! I am glad it works for you !!

Yea, no doubt. The Purple cams can be tuff on low compression engines.

It runs real nice with it.. but now you got me second guessing it.. Should I swap it for a Hughes whiplash?

If ya like it, leave it. How is the low end torque for you? Need more?

Low compression engines suffer hard because of the cams over lap being high. The more over lap, the more compression you loose. The cams with a lot of over lap are designed to work in high compression engines. Due note that over lap goes up with cam size. Bigger the cam, bigger the over lap.

IF you wanted to change the cam, less over lap is better. Crane cams have a wider centerline and less over lap for lower compression engines. There idle is also a lot smoother.

Comp Cams developed a line of cams for low compression engines and with exhaust manifolds. Headers a plus, but not needed.

I like the Hughes cam. I think it a good choice. Sounds wild and has a cruiser RPM band. A little extra stall in the converter would help a good bit on launch, but I do not think it is needed for a casual driver. At least with 3.23's and a stock tire height.

IF your heads can handle the extra lift with the 1.6 rockers and that cam, certainly go for it! The Hughes cam would be my choice if the target was a cruiser on a low comp. engine and a idle that kills.

I also have no doubt that power would be good and you can have a fun street car with that cam.

My low end torque is right there if you stomp it it'll roast the tires and you got to hold on to keep it from going sideways!
The around town driving sucks (traffic) the back roads and highways are great
