I am stripping the drivers door on my 73 Challenger and just wondering if anyone has suggestions for working around the VIN tag on the door. Car this be removed, without damaging, or is it better to leave it on and work around it, just mask before paint.

In my opinion, I would carefully mask it off and work around it. Too easy to damage it getting it off and it's only the original door sticker once!

They are designed to destroy themselves when removed.
Don't try to take it off. Leave it and work around it.
I vaguely recall ~40 years trying to peel one off at a junkyard and as I did it the word "Void" or something like that appeared on the remnant that was stuck to the door.

I guess I got lucky on mine. I wanted to keep the original and also paint the door. I used heat and a lot of patience. Not perfect but it will be okay.

OK, I was going to try the work around, however the label covers the top screw in the door latch. You would have to cut a hole through the label by Front GAWR damaging the label anyway. I am removing all hardware and the regulator.

They have a larger tag in 73, so you had access to all latch screws. If they would have placed my label down on the door an inch I would just work around it. You must have been very careful not to damage with the heat.

Personally, I still wouldn't remove it. Work around it even if part of it needs to be cut to remove the screw. Don't see how any judge could knock you down for keeping the original intact. Yes, you can get a duplicate made, but it's still not original. Your car, your choice of course. I really just don't like messing with any VIN information myself. Our factory documentation is what makes our cars almost tamper proof unlike Chevies and Fords.
