I bought a 70 Cuda last September and was told the engine had been rebuilt and ready to go. After being a tech for 40 years I don’t trust many “qualified “ people. Stripped the body down and sent it to the body shop end of April so I figured I’d go through the rebuilt 340 and check it out. Good thing because look at where the timing chain is set. I never even turned it over by hand. Like I said don’t trust too many “qualified “ people. But 2 months later it’s ready for accessories then storage until body gets back. And I know that it’s together correctly!

Good thing you checked, obviously the manufacturer put the timing mark in the wrong place!! Ha !
Or the cam required you to retard the timing for more top end !
I hope you fixed it and degreed the cam properly.
To me, when it comes to engines.
The word " Rebuilt" is the most misleading word in the dictionary.
That word just means that something is done wrong. 90% of the time.
Also should paint the bypass hose installed
I recommend a Police-silicone bypass hose if you can find one.

I'm not familiar with that particular timing set (Cloyes C3028X is my go to for small blocks), but I see no less than 5 (five) marks on the crankshaft gear - an "R", backwards "R" (Russian?), a faint "O" on the thicker section, another darker "O" and then an "A". Sure hope you found top dead center and degreed the camshaft in to make sure it's set up correctly!

My experience, the 0 at the keyway designates 0 degrees, then line up the 0 on the sprocket to the cam gear. Same method for the R -retarded, and A for advanced. 3 key way slots, 3 timing marks depending on what your goal is.
