1970 Challenger console automatic shifter

does anyone know what that little spring does,mine was just laying on floor not connected, thanks
 
Which spring? There are two springs. One for the shifter rod to torque shaft lever and a smaller one for the Slap-Stik shifter ratchet mechanism.
