Hi all, just joined and have had this question/clarification for years. My 1970 Cuda 383 4sp with factory air was a special order car (Y39). Not sure how many 4spds with air were made (another question). Anyway it has radio option code R21 which is am/fm solid state radio. Nothing really clearly shows what radio this really is for 1970 and websites only call out thumbwheel for am/fm 1970 cars but the R35 option (which I think is not solid state?). I did (finally) see a another 70 Cuda for sale that has the R21 option that shows a radio installed that as an am/fm with the two knobs on the LH side which per websites is only slated for 71-74. Is it possible mine being special order or maybe late model it did come with am/fm but with knobs on LH side? See fender tag photo. Lots of options. Thanks for any help!!

I may have seen the two-knob AM/FM in b-bodies during the 1970s. But when it comes to e-bodies, I only seem to recall ever seeing the thumb-wheel AM/FM version installed.

It's an early production model, December 1969, late production would have been may, june or july of 70. It would have a thumbwheel am/fm radio.

Do you have the car’s Broadcast Sheet?
The fender tag has codes that are not found on original fender tags.
R11, R22, and R35 are the typical radio option codes for 1970.

Cool!...."V4X".......Black Body Side Stripe (Strobe Tape) ...very rare..... Enjoy! PS: I have only seen the "LA Built" cars on their fender tag that states the "V1X" vinyl top twice (upper and lower) on the fender tag on LA built cars only (with the LA small font as well, but large font was available too)...hummmm.....interesting observation on your tag.

The tag is fake, there are many codes that are incorrect, nonexistent to an E Body, ones that MUST be there, but are not, etc.

The Broadcast Sheet would clear up all of the issues but Los Angeles cars are notorious for not having a sheet.

For comparison is my 1970 Charger that was ordered with the R21 radio.

R21: Solid State Radio - AM/FM 5.5 Watt 1,934 built 7.1% (source: 1970 Dodge Charger Registry)

Sold Car Sales Bank 1-: This code indicates whether the car was built for a customer order, or was part of a sales bank pre-determined order by the company that was shipped to dealers for sales on their dealer lots. To clarify, a customer order means a customer sat down with a dealer and completed an order form outlining exactly what options the customer wanted his/her car to be build with. A sales bank car is one that was delivered to the dealer and a customer would buy the car off the lot, in that scenario someone within Chrysler decided what options to build the car with, likely based on marketing data, and the customer had no hand in that process. The applicable codes here would be:

Y12 - Dealer Export Sale (dealer order for export)

Y14 - Sold Car Order (customer order)

Y16 - Sales Bank Order

Special Order 39: This code (option code Y39) identifies if the car was designated as a special order. This would be typically for show cars, road tests and the like where the car was designated for extra care in the assembly process to ensure the highest vehicle quality and fit and finish. A value of 9 in the box means this was a Special Order car and would be extremely rare.

@ylocuda

Do you have more information about the car? Broadcast sheet, window sticker or any other factory documentation?

How about some pictures of the car. Sounds like a cool car.

First off the tag is not fake. I bought the car in 1990 (35 years ago in LA). It needed a full resto but had no rust and why I bought it after moving to California from north east and never even knew cars existed with no rust. No build sheet or window sticker but all options listed on the tag were obviously what was reflected on the car other than missing radio. I restored the car from the ground up myself. The radio question has never been clearly resolved based on all the internet info. Special order car may be why its a very rare combo and never been questioned. I did find other Cuda with the R21 option and it showed the am/fm with two knobs. Also 4sp with A/C also extremely rare. Its just another mopar mystery that will obviously never be solved. I know Galen Govier has a picture of the tag, I saw him snap it in car show in Van Nuys Spring Fling a long time ago. Maybe he knows.

To add more to the mystery the door sticker shows it to be later model than the fender tag. I think Feb 1970. I just think being Y39 special order explains all the oddities. I was not aware of the V4X option being the strobe stripe and when I restored it, I just replaced the hockey stick stripe. I guess it is wrong based on the tag? I really do not think this tag is fake because the car was in dire need of a restoration and this tag was on the fender and it would’ve made no sense to fake a tag like this in 1990 on a car in dire need of restoration. Any comments are welcome and I appreciate it.

Ummmm, it is an unabashed fake, bogus, etc. I know why it is, it is up to you to tell us otherwise, which you can not do.

70 4715, I have to agree with you! The tag looks fake to me as well! It's missing telltale signs and certain codes that would be there. 🙂

Unfortunately it's an LA built car and very few of those had the build sheet placed inside the car. Sorry Ylocuda, I think you got scammed if you paid a lot for the car originally.

And yes, I remember people in the 90's doing crazy things with Mopar numbers. One of my favorites is a moron trying to sell a 69 Road Runner that he had in a box in the trunk of his car (VIN tag, body stamping sheet metal cut out, fender tag). One of the guys standing in our group this idiot was talking to about his "Road Runner" for sale was a retired CHP officer!!

Again, I have only have seen the "LA Built" cars (E code cars) on their fender tag that states the "V1X" vinyl top twice (upper and lower positions) on the fender tag only on the LA built cars. Also I see "CO2" on the production date on the fender tag (I think that is a December code), but the door sticker says "2 - 1970" Feburary.............Hummmm?

Well, regardless of the tag it sounds like a really cool car. Would love to see some pictures of the actual car that you put your heart, time and money into the "restoration".
No matter if the tag is one way or the other, if it rides around when you want it to then it is worth the effort! Cars that roll definitely rock!
Galen? The only thing he knows is whatever you want when you pay him some money. Would like to hear him actually chime in on anything, anywhere. hahahahaa

Hi, I paid $5800 for the car in 1990. The guy had several e-bodies for sale. I chose this one because it was a 4sp, was FY1 yellow and had no rust. It was his only 4sp which was a must have. The tag was not a selling point, it was just screwed in and not in perfect condition. I just wire wheeled it and it looked great after that. Whoever thinks its fake needs to rethink it. Why would someone fake it as a 383? Wouldn’t you fake it as at least as a 440? The Y39 option explains why its unique combination. I will post some pictures later of when I bought it and what it looks like now.

Hi Again, to further explain the tag us not fake is the firewall is for A/C car along with dash and heater box. The floor and shift tower are original and for a 4sp. Other options like duel remote color racing mirrors were correct, it has power disc brakes, rally dash, all chrome add ons match. Literally everything on the tag match car except the strobe stripe which was most likely removed from when it was repainted who knows when. The car was in an accident in the left front and the left inner fender and radiator support were (poorly) replaced with used parts. The car was really one step from being junked. I restored it as best I could to original based on the fender tag. I only added the rear spoiler and removed the vinyl top. The engine was incorrect being a 68 block and I replaced everything on the engine with 1970 correct parts, including the holley carburetor for a four speed. That was very hard to locate. The AC hoses were missing and I had to locate all that stuff too and now have it running with R12 Freon. That was expensive, but I had to do it because it’s original. The tag is not fake. I am 100% sure. Best guess as to why its weirding everyone out is the Y39 code. Everyone have a field day!! BTW I am not a sales person, just a lowly aerospace engineer getting close to retirement. First car ever owned was 1973 Dodge Challenger 318 car. My neighbor wrapped it around a tree. It ended up being a favor because it had so much rust on it, I was putting alot of money into a POS.
