1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye Project Car for sale

For sale is my 1973 Challenger Rallye with matching numbers 340 engine with factory A/C and is a project car. This is a genuine Rallye A57 package car equipped from the factory with its original E55 340 4-barrel V8, D34 TorqueFlite automatic transmission, console shift, factory air conditioning, bucket seats, Rallye stripe package, black vinyl roof, and Light Gold (JY3) paint.

Documentation
  • Original VIN tag
  • Original fender tag
  • Numbers-matching 340 engine
  • Original Production Broadcast Sheet
  • Built at Hamtramck, Michigan
  • Scheduled production date October 10, 1972
I purchased this car from a friend who inherited 10 cars from his Uncle, who restored cars. The Challenger was essentially a barn find and had been stored for many years.

After purchasing the car I serviced it extensively, replacing the original Carter carburetor with a rebuilt Holley 4 barrel, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, oil and oil filter, transmission filter, transmission fluid, transmission pan gasket, rear differential fluid and gasket, antifreeze, upper and lower radiator hoses, power steering fluid and a battery.

The engine started right up and with the true dual exhausts it had a deep performance sound and sounded like a NASCAR. I have not run the engine in approximately 10 years.

The air intake was replaced at some point with an Edelbrock intake and different air cleaner but the car came with the original intake, 340 orange air cleaner, jack and spare tire.

I began purchasing parts to restore the car. I painted the seat frames, recovered the passenger front seat, the rear seats and found the original Production Broadcast sheet under the rear seat springs.

I removed the old carpet, all seating except the driver’s seat, removed center console, rear seat panels and some exterior items such as the front parking lights. The dent in the driver’s front fender was caused by a farm tractor that backed into it, not an accident.

Please note in the pictures the car is sitting on four jack stands.

I have an inventory of all the new parts purchased with part numbers (see below). Most new parts were purchased from Year One. Included in the parts package are:

- Drivers floor patch panel
- Used driver side Challenger fender
- Passenger side fiberglass fender
- Two restored/ tested power seat mechanisms from a Chrysler New Yorker model that fit
- Original rare NOS black emissions canister
- New Mopar power trunk latch and switch
- Service and parts manuals and a service CD.
The total documented purchase cost of the parts is $7,916.

I am pricing this car fairly based on its condition as a restoration project and the rarity of its factory options and drivetrain.

This is a rare opportunity to restore a desirable E–body Mopar with its numbers–matching 340 engine, factory Rallye package and strong structural foundation. Of the 32,596 Dodge Challengers produced for 1973 only 8,412 were equipped with the 340 cubic inch V8 engine and only 6,653 were equipped with the TorqueFlite automatic transmission.

This Challenger is a factory JY3 Honey Gold (Light Gold) Rallye 340 car that was also originally equipped with a black vinyl top, black Rallye stripes, and factory air conditioning. The combination of Rallye package, numbers matching 340 engine, factory air conditioning, and original JY3 color makes this an uncommon and desirable restoration project.

This car retains its numbers-matching 340 engine and comes with a large collection of included parts. The frame rails, rocker panels and door bottoms appear solid, providing an excellent foundation for restoration.

I am selling this 1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye together with all included parts for $34,900. Reasonable offers will be considered.

This car is sold with a current Connecticut registration in my name. I also have a prior Connecticut title from a previous owner. Connecticut no longer issues titles for vehicles more than 20 years old.

This Challenger is being sold AS IS, WHERE IS with no warranties expressed or implied. The vehicle is located in Lebanon, CT 06249. Please contact me by PM with any questions or if you would like specific photos of any area of the car including engine, drivetrain, body, underside, etc. Please view additional pictures in my reply to this listing.
Thank you,
Randy

The VIN pad is on the passenger side of the transmission bellhousing. It is a raised pad with a flat machined surface. It is probably 18" to 24" straight back from where you took the pic of the engine VIN. Good luck with the sale.

Hi JD Mopar,
Thank you for your reply. I still do not see a raised pad on the bell housing on the passenger side about 18-24 inches from the engine VIN see the first 2 attached pictures of the passenger side of the transmission. On my Challenger there is no pad on the passenger side of the bell housing. The third picture is of the drivers side above the oil pan rail showing 2 stamped markings.I thought they were raised but they are stamped. The stamping are H2801542 and 3344959. The fourth picture is where the VIN pad should be on a 727. The last picture shows that this Challenger has a correct 727 TorqurFlite transmission as the trans oil pan is the correct shape and hence not a 904 tranny. Please any help or suggestions by anyone would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Randy

Great pics that show what you have! It is absolutely a small block 727. I'm not at home, so I can't look up the pan rail number in my white books. It is possible that the numbers matching transmission could have failed sometime early in the cars life and got swapped out at a transmission shop. That's just how they did it....they had rebuilt transmissions in stock, and when a customers car came in with a bad transmission, they yanked the bad one out and 10 minutes later installed a completely rebuilt transmission of the same kind right back in its place to get the customers car back to them quickly. They would then rebuild the transmission that they pulled from your car and keep it in stock to repeat that process when another customer came in with a bad transmission identical to the one they pulled from your car.

Since that 727 has no VIN pad on the passenger side of the bellhousing, look up on the top edge of the bellhousing flange right near the distributor. In 1968 model cars, they stamped the engine VIN on the top of the block flange where it meets the bellhousing. Then they stamped the transmission VIN on the top of the flange of the bellhousing where it meets the block. They just mirrored each other, one on the block and the other on the transmission. If you find a number there like 8B123456, it may be a 727 small block transmission from a 68 Dart or Barracuda, which would be functionally the same as the 727 that came in your Challenger in 1973. It is even possible to use a 727 from a small block pickup truck, but swap the tailshaft housing to one from a car 727 so floor shift linkage could be used. Hope this helps some!

Hi JDMopar,
I agree with you and also believe this is a transmission from a 1967-1968 Chrysler (see picture of the Chrysler Corp Identification Code table attached showing 2801542 as a 1967-1968 Dodge or Plymouth transmission….so not the original tranny.

The numbers on the driver side of transmission above the pan rail show H2801542 and 3344959.

H2801542
The H prefix identifies the transmission plant — and the 7-digit number 2801542 is a sequential serial number, a format used in 1967 and earlier model year transmissions.
  • 2801542: This is the official 7-digit Mopar part number.
    • According to Chrysler parts catalogs, this exact number specifies a Torqueflite A727 transmission built for a 1967–1968 model year 318 V8 passenger car application with a standard extension housing.

3344959 (The Sequential Serial Number)
  • 3344959: This is a unique 7-digit sequential serial number.
    • For Mopar transmissions built in 1967 and earlier, Chrysler stamped a straightforward production sequence number right after the part number. (Starting in 1968, they transitioned to a 10,000-day calendar date code system instead). This confirms your transmission is a 1967 production unit.
Conclusions is the transmission in this Challenger is from 1967-1968 and is a correct Chrysler 727 TorqueFlite transmission. The car shows over 30,000 miles on the odometer thus is over 130,000 miles so a transmission replacement makes sense with that many miles. I agree that a transmission replacement at a tranny shop would install whatever 727 transmission they had rebuilt in stock and rebuild the removed transmission for the next customer. I will edit my listing that the tranny is from a 1967-1968 car.
Thanks again for your help,
Randy
