'73 rally accent paint ?

my main question here is, does anyone have the original paint accent layouts,(tail light housings and center section) what colors, and textures were used. drawings or pics would be a major help. thanks alot in advance, Postcar.

If the factory drawings exist, I've never seen them posted. The tail panels came one of two ways in 72 and only one way in 73-74.

Original unrestored tail panel on a 72 Rallye.(JS VIN) Only the Rallye in 72 got this paint treatment.

This is how the standard Challenger in 72 was painted...as well as ALL 73-74's.(argent tail panel with organisol around tail lights)

The black areas are textured organisol.(same as on T/A hoods) The silver is textured argent. There is debate on if it's light or dark. You can get the correct stuff from Rodger Gibson. It's not cheap but it's the closest there is. The argents from Totally Auto aren't even close. The light is too light and the dark is too dark for these tail panels.

72 was the only year that the Rallye was a separate model.(JS designation on the VIN) THis is why I think it was a one year only paint scheme. All 73-74's had the JH VIN and the Rallye was just a package ontop of the standard Challenger.

Also the argent tape line is up under the trunk lip. It was masked off about an inch after wrapping around the corner towards the weatherstripping. THis was so you wouldn't see the mask line under the trunk lid from behind.

Thanks burdar. I wish that the trunk lid was open on the original car photo. the tape line would be the same for both paint colors. I really aint worried about it too much because I would guess it was fairly self explanitory. maybe someone has the pic I'm seeking. thanks again burdar.

You can kind of see it at the top of this pic. The argent goes back toward the trunk opening about an inch.

Here are some pictures of the rear portion of my car that is still original paint. Not great paint, but original.
Drivers side


Passenger side


The light pockets are flat black with the silver surrounding the rest.
the 3 filler pieces all are painted the same as the main panel. the textured silver.

Close ups around the tail lights. I suspect that during original painting they placed a formed cup into the light openings. As you can see the silver areas actually overlap the outermost seam line around the lights and is not real consistent around the perimeter.
Some of the pictures show the flat black still remaining and some are showing the reddish primer color. but you can clearly see where the silver ends.

Jack instructions. Assumption is that it was placed on the lid with it off of the car because it is upside down when installed.

Fender/quarter cut lines


As for the above mentioned note that the 4 light recesses were textured. Mine are not. They are painted only a flat black. After reading this I even went out and looked closely to be sure and I cannot see any evidence of texturing. I am not the original owner so I cannot 100% be certain but...
I have owned it since 1983.

I don't think the factory was very concerned with the details on the tape lines of any type of black out paint areas. Just do what looks good to you. They didn't take much time for any masking. You can look at a dozen cars and no 2 will be exactly the same.

This is great info. Just what I'm looking for. By the way, did the factory also not take much time for placing the rear quarter panel emblems or those were pretty precise to these measurements? Thanks.

Not unless there were mounting holes to put them in, you can find the "specs" for the placement. But that was just a guide. Sorry to say but our cars didn't have the best in quality control back then. That is why pictures and documentation are so important for that 100 point "correct " resto. No 2 cars are the exactly the same.

The black was organisol. The amount of texture that is correct has been debated as well. Depending on how it was sprayed, there might not have been much. Organisol doesn't have near the texture that argent does.

Thanks for those pics. The area up into the trunk is very dark. It looks like the tail panels lightened up over the years from being exposed to the elements. Mine needs to be redone I think.
