Hi everyone I have an 833 question is the 1970 E body 833 the same for 340 and 383 thanks looking to pick one up.

It would generally be expected that a small block transmission would have a close gear ratio and a big block transmission would be a wide ratio gear pattern. This is to accommodate the smaller hp bandwidth on a small block associated with high rpm while the big block provides torque over a wider rpm range, imho.

The bell housing is obviously different, but the transmission is basically the same. As mentioned in 1972 the "Std" had this gearing:

First: 2.47:1
Second: 1.77:1
Third: 1.34:1
Fourth: 1.00:1
Reverse: 2.40:1

The "Heavy Duty" had this gearing:

First: 2.44:1
Second: 1.77:1
Third: 1.34:1
Fourth: 1.00:1
Reverse: 2.36:1

There are different size spines on some of the A833 transmission. I just replaced the seals on mine and there were two options for seal sizes. There are different size spines also. Passion Performance are experts on these transmissions. They can assist you as they offer them rebuilt some with an overdrive option.

Correct the front brg can be 307 or 308 , the front brg retainer is 4.35 OD with 307 , 4.80 with 308 , or 5.125 with 308 & OD you will need a different bell housing or an adapter ring to use the 4.35 with the 4.80 belhousing , but they all still bolt up , I used to machine the 5.125 retainer down to 4.80 & use the normal belhousing for OD unless I had a small block application & the OD belhousing to match
